ASD
(Autism Spectrum Disorder)

Many people on the spectrum, may not agree with the word disorder. As it has a negative connotation and prejudiced stigma in society that ties with it. Some may prefer to be called Autistics, while some prefers others. It is best to enquire which way is most comfortable for them. And since its described as a Spectrum, it means no two person is alike.

So whatever you read, take it as a general idea or concept, for your understanding, and find out your child/ family member's profile. Even with each descriptor, it may not encompass every detail and might even share similarities with another descriptor.

Alot of research shows overlap of shared similarities or traits, thus strategies to support each individual will vary. Every parent and educator is encouraged to observe and trial various options, to find the most suitable one. Remember, your child is unique and amazing.

1 WHAT IS ASD

Here is a clear visual representation to explain what is ASD.

2 Three areas of challenge

This is an idea of the "Triad of impairment" in a very simple visual format.

Impairment of the brain may affect these areas :

  • SOCIAL INTERACTION
  • COMMUNICATION
  • RIGID & REPETITIVE ACTIVITIES & INTERESTS

It does not mean every individual has the same challenges. Every person has unique construct and is affected differently.

3 PROCESS OF IDENTIFICATION

Often, parents might get fearful of screenings and diagnosis. Do note that results may vary and it does not equate to true cognitive ability. Assessments give a basic outline of which milestones your child might be at, this gives more information for educators and professionals to better understand how to support your child.
UNDERSTAND SCREENINGS & DIAGNOSIS

As every child is unique, different assessments are needed for specific evaluations of skillsets, and customised Individualised Educational Plans (IEP) will be advised for planning of learning and bridge gaps.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) is the handbook used by health care professionals as an authoritative volume containing and categorising descriptions, symptoms, and other criteria for diagnosis.

4 MORE ABOUT ASD

6 ADVOCATE . ACCEPTANCE . AWARENESS . APPRECIATION

THE FOUR IMPORTANT PRACTICES AND WHY

Here are some individuals who are able to advocate for themselves as well as for others

Rosie was born with autism. She says even though living with it is difficult, it makes her unique and who she is.

Carly Fleischmann was diagnosed with autism, oral-motor apraxia and cognitive delay as a child. Through years of persistent therapy and hard work, Carly learned to spell and her voice eventually found its way out. Today she types with one finger, and shares the truths and mysteries (as she calls it) of autism.
