Communication |
Communication is a very important key part of life.
We communicate to allow ourselves be understood, to support our needs, to ask for directions, to describe or to even share a memory with someone we care about. It is possible to communicate in a variety of ways as tools and devices become more accessible for modifications to how we communicate. Some sign, some write, some use a tool.
Communication is NOT Acquired Language nor Speech, but how and what we do to achieve understanding. It also supports social interactions.
In every communication, there is also non-verbal communication and verbal communication. Non-verbal communication is almost 80% of all our daily interactions, while 20% is verbal. That is because we communicate with our body gestures and postures, facial expressions, tonality and sounds. Some individuals do experience NVLD (non-verbal learning difficulty), which makes it hard to communicate or interact as effectively.
Below are some of the challenges that can occur.

ASD: Is Speech the Most Important Focus?
Speech is just making the words out. Speech Difficulties like Apraxia is affected most because there are challenges using the throat muscles and parts to create the intended sound. So A speech therapist can devise methods to help the individual sound the word. A speech therapist (depending on their acquired certifications) can also guide a child how to communicate technically. The trouble with this, is the non-verbal understanding that might still affect the learner from inferring. You might feel it, especially when the situation changes, when its not exactly the same, or gets complicated. Thus guiding a child's non-verbal communication is a key important plan parents and educators should definitely look into as well.

This is a very detailed explanation. However if you find it difficult to understand, you might want to process each Point Form slowly. Eg. One point form a day. Reading too fast sometimes may miss the true understanding. You might be surprised sometimes "talking out loud" is a way of affirming something. So don't rush, please take time to go into their shoes.
2. What is echolalia?
|
The most common reason would be the lack of language development. When we give the individual more vocabulary and langauge, the echolalia will definitely reduced as more acquired language is being used.
