STUDY: IMPROVING DENTAL HEALTHCARE Dear fellow parents, Dental and oral hygiene is a key area that is often difficult for our children with ASD. I have 2 boys with ASD, my younger one is a very concrete learner and a non-verbal child. Tooth brushing and dental care has always been a big challenge. I would like to encourage you to partner NUH Dentistry Dr Tong Huei Jinn to participate in this study that aims to improve access to dental care for our children. The information is below. For more details you can also contact: DR. V. JUNNARKAR ON [email protected] OR TEXT/CALL 81280875. God Bless, Dominique Study Aim: To find out the specific barriers to dental care by seeking the opinion of parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and of professionals (occupational therapists and speech therapists) who help these children in other aspects of life. - We hope this study will help to improve the existing dental care system and develop new tools for better access and acceptance of dental care. Potential recruitment sites/participants: - Our project will look at recruiting parents of children with autism spectrum disorders aged 3-12 years old and professionals (occupational therapists and speech therapists) from Special Education (SPED) schools, Early intervention centres, parent support groups and the National University Hospital (NUH). Participant commitments: - This is a minimal risk study, as it involves completion of a short anonymised questionnaire (just some demographics)and an interview or focus group discussion where participants will be grouped with other similar participants [parents group or professionals group]. - Parent participants will be asked to share their opinions, ideas and experiences about their child’s dental care needs. - Professionals will be asked to share their ideas, views and experiences relating to management of oral health in children with ASD. - The participants will not be identified in the analysis. - The participants will be reimbursed a token sum of $50 for their time and travel. - Interviews will lat about 1 hour, and and focus group discussion about 1.5 hours respectively. Each participant (parent or professional) will be either interviewed or be participating in a focus group discussion as a one-off, depending on their preference. Outcome of study: - The information obtained will help dental researchers better understand the challenges parents and children with ASD face when visiting the dentist and potentially help dentists make dental treatment more acceptable to these children. - It will also be used to help guide us in the development of a dental health promotion app which is made specifically with the child with ASD in mind (to prepare them for dental visits and to guide them for home oral care). |

I hope to accurately create these characters 1) An autistic child who is a VERY FUSSY EATER / has Sensory Processing Disorder which makes mealtimes very difficult 2) The parents who have to come up with creative ways to feed the child I have read stories about the severly autistic boy who only drinks from one type of drinking cup And another autistic boy who only eats foods that are blue in colour, so his mum has to be really creative I hope to be able to talk to you, hear your stories, so that I can create characters that have depth and are truthful! To raise the awareness of ASD and also the stuggles of caregivers! You can contact me (Luin) by 81808529 (whatsapp is good!) [email protected] Thank you!
