Strategies & Understanding for
Expressive Language

Struggles with expressive language affects expressive speech, composition writing,
and individuals may face misunderstanding easily.
It is imperative to understand that there are a few components with regards to language acquisition.
However we need to first differentiate that social communication and language are two different things that combine to give us all the ability to communication with one another.

Social communication is the back and fro connection we manage when we communicate with another person. This requires skills for inter-relational relationship, developing milestones for social relationship development, and appraising and building on conversations.

Language is the acquired knowledge of words that describes or is used to communicate a thought.

That is why both work hand-in-hand with each other. Individuals who show signs of difficulty may experience struggles with these aspects, not forgetting other challenges that are also hidden, such as processing of information, and the affect of sensory input that disturbs the process or cause chaos with the processes. Understanding and being able to differentiate these needs, may help the child to feel supported and understood.

Most individuals experience being criticized for behavior problems, and not attentive enough. We should transform these to better understand what is it that is underlying, that affects our children.

There are three kinds of language challenge.

Receptive language issues involve difficulty understanding what others are saying.

Expressive language issues
involve difficulty expressing thoughts and ideas.

Mixed receptive-expressive language issues involve difficulty understanding and using spoken language.
